Ill Effects - Figure of eight

Catalog: IAR082
Release date: 2021-26-04

Returning to fast-rising French drum and bass label IA Recordings with his first release of the year, South East England's Ill Effects is back with the murky new single ''Figure of Eight'', which comes complete with a choppy B-side entitled ''Cut 'Em Up''.

After impressing with his fourth album Generation – made up of a whopping seventeen tracks – back in December, the Kent-based talent is showing no signs of slowing, with this pair of previously unheard offerings demonstrating his increasingly refined signature sound.

Title track ''Figure of Eight'' finds an amalgamation of scratchy basslines jostling for attention, with pounding, punctuative drums piercing through the mix, underscored by a novel combination of unnerving, atmospheric drones and murmured spoken-word samples. The result? A barbarous, chugging stepper, pulling listeners into sparse, atmospheric soundscapes before building back up to epic, eerie climaxes.

''Cut 'Em Up'', meanwhile, is an even skippier affair, with accented, synthetic strings looping over and over to form an infectious violin motif. Introduce sonorous piano passages and bullish breaks into the mix and you get one of the Tunbridge Wells beatmaker's most ambitious works yet. If his name's not already firmly on your radar, it certainly should be now.

One love from Ia Fam'
